LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bobby Petrino is getting his second chance in Louisville, but he says that is not what the newly formed Petrino Family Foundation is all about.
"This is all about helping the children and helping the community," Petrino said Thursday. The coach says a trip to visit hurt children and premature babies during his first coaching stint in Louisville in 2005 made a lasting impression. "It's about life, and I don't think there's any better place that we could support than Kosair Children's Hospital."
Petrino's oldest daughter, Kelsey Petrino Scott, is the "head coach" of sorts for this mission. She is serving as the Executive Director of the newly formed foundation.
"It brings me great pride and excitement to announce our pledge to Kosair Children's Hospital through the hospital foundation of 1 million dollars to help build the new Petrino Family Trauma Room," Petrino Scott said Thursday. Kosair's trauma unit treats the most severely injured children in Kentucky.
The Petrino family is also launching a scholarship fund, giving money to students who could otherwise not afford to go to college. The family will even be donating money to buy the U of L marching band new uniforms.
Coach Petrino says he will donate 100 percent of his endorsement money to his family's charity.
Petrino also reaffirmed his commitment to U of L, Thursday, saying Louisville is where he will finish out his career.
This time around, we're seeing a softer side of the successful coach who is trying to prove that even he knows there some things more important than the game.
