LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Abortion opponents gathered Tuesday at the Kentucky state Capitol in Frankfort for the 49th annual Right to Life rally.
Kentucky currently has a near-total prohibition against abortion in place. Event leaders said the rally was about celebrating the beauty and dignity of human life.
State law only allows a woman to get an abortion if her life is at risk. People who rallied on Tuesday said more still needs to be done.
"We need more about our religion, our life, our morals and decide what's really important in life," said Nancy Zaletta.
"I pray that we will become more a pro-life state and that the government does get involved to help with expenses, whatever a new mother needs,"Ā Diane Schuchter said.
In 2022, Kentucky voters rejected a ballot measure that would have denied any constitutional protections for abortion, but abortion rights supporters have made no inroads in the Legislature in chipping away at the state's anti-abortion laws.
The legal challenge revolves around Kentuckyās near-total trigger law ban and a separate six-week ban ā both passed by the stateās GOP-dominated Legislature. The trigger law was passed in 2019 and took effect when Roe v. Wade was overturned. It bans abortions except when theyāre carried out to save the life of the patient or to prevent disabling injury. It does not include exceptions for cases of rape or incest.
