LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Elon Musk is putting his money behind a Kentucky businessman's push to win the Republican primary in the race for Mitch McConnell's U.S Senate seat.

The New York Times reports that Musk, the world's richest man, donated $10 million to a PAC or political action committee supporting Nate Morris. Before the donation, Morris had been funding his own campaign.

Morris is one of six GOP candidates hoping to replace McConnell, who is not seeking re-election after more than 40 years in office. The political race is among this year's most competitive.

Other Republicans in the race include U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, former state Attorney General Daniel Cameron, Mike Faris, Wende Kennedy and Andrew Shelley. The GOP hopefuls all support Trump, hoping to land his endorsement in a state that Trump overwhelmingly carried in the past three presidential elections.

The donation, first reported by Axios, could be Musk's first move to play a bigger role in midterm elections. The tech billionaire has had harsh words for the Republican party, since his fallout with President Donald Trump last year. He has also pushed for McConnell to step down as Republican leader in the Senate since 2023.

Kentucky's primary election

Democrats in the Senate race include Amy McGrath, a retired Marine aviator; former Kentucky state Rep. Charles Booker; Pamela Stevenson, a state lawmaker and former military judge advocate general; Logan Forsythe, an attorney and former U.S. Secret Service agent; and Joel Willett, a military veteran and former CIA officer, thoroughbred trainer Dale Romans, Jared Randall and Vincent Thompson.

Kentucky's primaries will be held May 19, followed by the general election Nov. 3.
