LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A proposed bill in the Kentucky legislature aimed at increasing penalties for DUI offenses has passed through a House committee.

Thursday, the House Standing Committee on Judiciary passed House Bill 220. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Rebecca Raymer, R-Morgantown, would make third or additional DUI offenses within a 10-year period a Class D felony.

"Repeated offenses of drinking and driving under the influence put lives at risk, and stronger penalties are necessary to deter this dangerous behavior,” Raymer said in a news release Wednesday. “By making a third DUI offense within ten years a felony and requiring a minimum jail sentence, this measure sends a clear message that reckless disregard for public safety will not be tolerated.”

In addition, it would also require people convicted of three or more DUI offenses serve no less than 120 days in jail.

"Driving under the influence is not just a mistake; it is a serious threat to our communities,” Raymer added. “This legislation would ensure that repeat offenders face real consequences, protecting innocent lives and reinforcing our commitment to road safety.”
