LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Ten Commandments is one step closer to being back on display in Frankfort.
The Kentucky House voted Wednesday to pass House Joint Resolution 15, which would restore the monument to capitol grounds.
Some state lawmakers want to reinstall a granite statue of the Ten Commandments on the grounds of the Capitol.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles originally gifted the statue to the commonwealth in 1971, but it was removed a few years later over legal issues.
In 2002, the monument was returned to the Fraternal Order of Eagles' chapter in Hopkinsville after some felt placing it on state property was a violation of the First Amendment, which protects freedom of religion.
HJR 15 passed the Kentucky House 79-13 and will now head to the Kentucky Senate.
