LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Ten Commandments could soon be back on display in Frankfort.
Some Kentucky lawmakers want to reinstall a granite statue of the Ten Commandments on the ground of the Capitol.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles originally gifted the statue to the commonwealth in 1971, but it was removed a few years later over legal issues. In 2002, the monument was returned to the Fraternal Order of Eagles' chapter in Hopkinsville after some felt placing it on state property was a violation of the First Amendment, which protects freedom of religion.
"My concerns are the church and state argument," Rep. Erika Hancock, D-Frankfort, said during a committee hearing Thursday.
If passed, House Joint Resolution 15 would include the monument’s installation on the new state capitol grounds.
"Kentucky and our nation have a long history and tradition of public monuments and displays that acknowledge the role the Ten Commandments have played, Rep. Shane Baker, R-Somerset, said Thursday.
The resolution passed out of committee Thursday. It now moves to the House floor.
