LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Members of the Kentucky National Guard could receive emergency response pay when responding to disasters under a bill passed by the Kentucky House.

The measure, House Bill 364, would make Guard members eligible for hazard pay when they are called to active duty after the governor declares a state of emergency in Kentucky.

The legislation is sponsored by Steve Bratcher, R-Elizabethtown.

Under the proposal, Guard members could receive emergency response pay during the first 72 hours after activation, or longer if necessary. Lawmakers say the initial response period often involves dangerous and demanding work.

During emergencies, Guard members frequently assist with rescue operations, help secure infrastructure, distribute supplies and support local first responders.

Bratcher said Guard members often leave their families and civilian jobs behind when they are activated to respond to disasters across the state.

The bill now moves to the Kentucky Senate for consideration.
