LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Kentucky lawmaker filed legislation that would make it a crime for people who are living in the United States illegally to look for work.
House Bill 62, filed by Rep. John Hodgson, R-Fisherville, would classify unlawful employment as a Class A misdemeanor. Under the bill, a person defined as an "unauthorized alien" under federal immigration law would be prohibited from seeking or being paid for work.
Hodgson said the measure is intended to protect job opportunities and wages for U.S. citizens and people legally authorized to work.
He also cited Kentucky's low workforce participation rate, arguing unauthorized employment can negatively affect wages and job availability for residents.
The proposal was filed Tuesday and will be considered during the 2026 General Assembly session.
