LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Republicans want to eliminate the state's income tax, but Democrats don't think that's possible.

Instead, they have two plans to tax the wealthy.

A few years ago, Republicans made it a priority to lower the state income tax rate from 6% to zero. Most recently, it dropped to 3.5%.

As long as Kentucky meets the financial triggers set in place, the income tax rate will continue to go down.

But Democrats said the state will need to raise more money to keep up with services like affordable health care and food benefits. They suggest a gradual tax rate increase for mid-range to upper range income earners.

Another option would target the top 5% of Kentucky earners.

"They would be taxed at a rate of 6%," Rep. Lindsey Burke, D-District 75, said. "Everyone else would enjoy the march to zero, and the money works that way."

As of now, it doesn't look like the Democrat tax proposal will get the support it needs as Republicans hold a supermajority in both chambers.
