LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A terrifying scene unfolded Tuesday morning as the cab of a tractor-trailer dangled from an overpass above Interstate 65 after a crash that shut down I-65, two busy ramps and made a mess morning commuters.

The morning started off wet and dreary, and as the rain came down, the roads got slick.

By 3:30 a.m., things had taken a turn for the worse. As 911 calls came in, the Swift Transportation semi could be seen with its cab hanging off the Interstate 65 ramp on the Louisville side of the Kennedy Bridge. Louisville Metro Police said the truck jackknifed just before the crash, and the cab came to rest on the side of the interstate's retaining wall.

Fortunately, the driver was able to free himself on his own without injury.

However, other issues spilled over after both gas tanks on the big rig ruptured, spilling diesel fuel on the roadway below. First responders estimated up to 100 gallons needed to be cleaned up under the I-65 southbound lanes and ramp, as well as parts of the westbound and eastbound I-64 lanes.

The crash affected all lanes of Interstate 65 south right off the Kennedy Bridge, Interstate 65 north to Interstate 64 west ramp, and the Interstate 65 south to Interstate 71 north ramp.

A crane lifted the semitruck back onto the roadway a few hours after the crash, and all lanes and ramps of Interstate 65 reopened around 9 a.m.

The scene was eerily similar to what happened on the 2nd Street Bridge on March 1 of this year, when a semitruck involved in a chain-reaction crash broke through the bridge barriers and dangled over the Ohio River. The driver had to be pulled from the rig by Louisville firefighters in a daring rescue

Thankfully, both drivers made it out safely.
