LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The closure of King Elementary meant a new school for many students. Now, a familiar food program is making the move with them.
Shady Rays is continuing its funding for Blessings in a Backpack from King to Maupin Elementary, where many former King students now attend.
The Louisville-based eyewear company will fund weekend food for every Maupin student who qualifies for the program during the 2026-27 school year.
Shady Rays previously supported the program at King. When the school closed as part of Jefferson County Public Schools' budget cuts, the company chose to continue that support at Maupin.
"The closure of a school affects so much more than where a child goes each morning," said Kim Holsclaw, managing director of the Blessings in a Backpack Louisville Chapter.
Blessings in a Backpack sends food home with students on Fridays for the weekend. The Louisville chapter serves more than 5,200 children at 43 schools each weekend during the school year.
The organization says nearly 80,000 children in Louisville experience food insecurity. For more information about Blessings in a Backpack, visit online.
