LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Sherman Minton Bridge is expected to reopen on Wednesday.
The bridge spanning over the Ohio River connecting Louisville to southern Indiana closed Friday afternoon "until further notice." Officials said the closure of the bridge was initiated out of an abundance of caution.
According to a news release, officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and building contractors plan to reopen the bridge that transports traffic on Interstate 64 on Wednesday.
Repairs to remedy the floor beam alignment issues are underway, which will allow for safe reopening of top and bottom decks for both eastbound and westbound traffic.
"Construction crews and engineers will work through the night to reopen a safe and sound bridge to travelers," Royce Meredith, program manager with KYTC, said in a news release.
The repair work was centered around relocating temporary construction rigging, tensioning the connections and conducting thorough and detailed inspections.
"The thoroughness of our inspections, analyses and design repair plans gives us confidence for a safe and speedy reopening Wednesday," Danny Corbin, INDOT program manager, said news release.
“And the design-build approach that we’ve taken to this major project helps us address problems that arise quickly, safely and efficiently.”
The work is part of the ongoing Sherman Minton Renewal Project, which is aimed at painting and rehabilitating the 61-year-old bridge. The project is anticipated to give the six-lane, double-decked bridge up to 30 more years of life.
Work on Phase Four began in mid-November and includes structural steel repair and replacement, bridge painting, pavement preservation, and concrete bridge deck replacement on the final section of the top westbound deck.

WDRB News asked project officials what time the bridge is expected to reopen Wednesday but they have not yet responded.
