LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — The City of Shively swore in Monday evening a new chief of police and fire chief.
André Bottoms Sr. became the first Black man to lead the Shively Police Department.
Bottoms is taking over the department from Chief Emery Frye, who is retiring after more than 20 years.
Bottoms brings 35 years of service in the Marine Corps, Louisville Metro Police and Shively police.
"I hope that I can inspire people that look like me, young men and women, who have aspirations of becoming a chief that they know they can do it, that it's possible," Bottoms said.
Bottoms will officially take over as chief Aug. 1.
Fire Chief Charles Mucker is leaving to pursue other opportunities and is being replaced by Kevin Tyler.
"I love serving the people, I love working with firefighters, so I'm excited for this new chapter and new challenge in my life," Tyler said.
