LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- You might notice smoke in the air Thursday in south Louisville. Crews are conducting a prescribed burn on the open field at the top of Uppill Road in Iroquois Park.

From about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., crews will conduct a prescribed burn on the 18-acre Summit Field as part of "prairie management," the Olmsted Parks Conservancy said. It's the first prescribed burn in the area in seven years.

"Historically, the Summit Field area of Iroquois was known as Burnt Knob and had been maintained by fire," Olmsted Parks Conservancy Project Manager Liz Winlock said in a news release Thursday. "In 1996, the original prairie habitat was restored with native plants and prescribed burns have been carried out every few years. The last prescribed burn was conducted in 2016."

Olmsted said prescribed burns have many ecological benefits, including reducing invasive plants, stimulating of native grasses, regenerating and enriching soil, and improving the habitat for native pollinators and birds.

Smoke may be visible in the area.
