LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana nonprofit was recognized for its work supporting veterans.
Hoosier Hunters Helping Our Heroes was founded by Patrick Mertens, Josh Woods, Bob Blair and Jason Miles. The four men are from Hibernia in Clark County. They started the nonprofit to provide lodging and guided hunts for U.S. paralyzed and disabled veterans.
James Layne, a veteran on the organization's board, and Miles were invited to the 2024 Sturgis Buffalo Chip music festival in South Dakota during the Freedom Celebration with musician Kid Rock. According to a news release, the nonprofit received a plaque, wooden flag and Action Trackchair, which is an all-terrain wheelchair that can be used for hunting.
The chair was donated by Op1Vet, a company based in Indiana.
Hoosier Hunters Helping Our Heroes has provided more than 140 hunts for paralyzed and other disabled veterans in the past 10 years, according to a news release.
Layne spoke to the crowd after the nonprofit received the chair, saying "this chair is not going to help one vet, it's going to help many veterans for years, and a tool to the local veteran community."
