LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- St. Vincent de Paul in the Shelby Park neighborhood will soon open its Waypoint House in Louisville, a 24-single room residence for male and female veterans who are homeless, at immediate risk of homelessness or living in transitional housing.
The new private rooms Waypoint House, at Preston and St. Catherine streets on the nonprofit's campus in the Shelby Park neighborhood, include self-service kitchens, laundry facilities and common spaces, the Louisville nonprofit said. All units are restricted to people whose income is at or below $31,000 annually.
"This is open to any veteran that has been discharged by one of the services," said David Calzi, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul.
For two decades, St. Vincent de Paul has helped provide shelter for veterans through emergency and transitional housing. However, the new space is creating two dozen opportunities for affordable, permanent housing.
Calzi said the units are furnished with a bed, mattress, side chair, kitchenette and more. Also, there will be two full-sized kitchens on each floors.
"If they want to bring something else in — artwork or anything like that, it's their apartment," he said Friday. "They have a lease."
Each room will share a bathroom with the one next door, and laundry facilities are just down the hall. And on the other side of the building is a food pantry where the veterans can access grocery items on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
SVdP said monthly rent is $582 for a one-year lease, including utilities. Vouches and other forms of rental assistance are accepted.
Louisville leaders said last year that the city is short around 30,000 affordable housing units and they believe projects like this help make a difference.
"For the community to know and appreciate that there is so many in need in Louisville is extremely important," Calzi said.
