EDGEWOOD, Ky. (AP) -- An engineering class at Turkey Foot Middle School in northern Kentucky is hoping a new project will benefit a student at the school.

Teacher Dwayne Humphrey says his eighth-grade students learn about biomedical design and this year they are working with a 3-D printer to build a prosthetic hand for a student who was born without the lower part of her left arm.

He told The Kentucky Enquirer that he's trying to engage students in work that is meaningful.

Makayla Murphy said she quickly agreed to be the model for the eighth-grade class project.

Humphrey says the class is on a long journey and they don't know how it will end, but "we're going to give it our best effort."
