LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor was honored Wednesday with the Brandeis Medal by UofL's Brandeis School of Law.
The medal is the "highest honor" given by the Brandeis School of Law. UofL said it recognizes recipients chosen for their "devotion to economic, social or political justice and for advancing the cause of public service in the legal profession."
UofL President Kim Schatzel and Brandeis School of Law Dean Melanie B. Jacobs presented the medal to Sotomayor during a ceremony at the Louisville Marriott Downtown.
Sotomayor has served on the Supreme Court since August 2009 after being nominated by former President Barack Obama as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
When announcing Sotomayor as the recipient of the Brandeis Medal, the university said her "commitment to public service reflects many of the values for which Louis D. Brandeis is most known and serves as a wonderful model for Brandeis Law students and its community."
Sotomayor is the seventh Supreme Court justice to receive the medal, following Harry Blackmun, Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Sandra Day O'Connor and John Paul Stevens.
