Suspected purse-snatcher could face additional charges after police chase

The search for a suspected purse-snatcher turned into a dramatic police chase through three counties Thursday.

Robert Ellis II, 45, was in Floyd County court Friday afternoon. He faces a long list of charges and could face even more.

He drove from Louisville onto I-64 into Indiana, then onto I-265 and on state and county roads though Floyd and Clark County before he was arrested in a field off of St. Joseph Road and State Road 60.

One his alleged victims, Becca Hunnicutt, said her purse was stolen. She said Ellis took it, and she watched the police chase on the news as it was unfolding.

“My heart was beating really quickly, and I really wanted him to be caught," Hunnicutt said. "I was very eager to see it end.

"He took my purse, he took an iPhone, a work phone and he took my makeup bag,” Hunnicutt said. “In total, what he took valued almost $1,000.”

As investigators searched Ellis's red truck, they found piles of purses. Police think he is responsible for more than a dozen robberies.

“When I saw the police chase, and I saw they stopped him and they were aggressive about it, it really gave me a certain amount of satisfaction because they did their job,” Hunnicutt said. “They got the criminal and at the end of the day. He is behind bars.”

Ellis was arrested for resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, criminal mischief, reckless driving, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and three counts of operating while intoxicated endangerment.

“Possibly drugs at this point is what it appears to be,” Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson said.

Ellis could see more charges in three different counties after a longer investigation.

"He will have to complete his criminal sentence [in Floyd County] before he is returned to Kentucky,” Henderson said.

As for Hunnicutt’s handbag, she might not see it again, but she's just happy no one was badly injured.

“I'm hopeful to get my stuff back, but who knows what he did with it after he took it,” Hunnicutt said.
