LOUISVILLE, KY (WDRB) -- It's coming. You know the type of heat. The sun is beating down on you heat, the kids are splashing in the water heat, the sweating in you know where heat.
Triple-digit temperatures topping 100 degrees are expected in Louisville and surrounding areas over the next several days. Wednesday's high in Louisville was 90 degrees, which will feel relatively cool compared to what meteorologist are forecasting for Thursday and this weekend.
Louisville Water Company has teams inspecting the city's infrastructure, especially things like fire hydrants to make sure they're in working order. Spokeswoman Kelley Dearing Smith said that during hotter days, the city increases it's water usage – pumping between 180 to 190 million gallons of water each day.
Experts warn to wear light, loose-fitting clothing and to drink plenty of water. Louisville Water Company plans to be near city hall Thursday, distributing bottles of water to those trying to beat the heat.
Churchill Downs was forced to cancel races Thursday and push back the post times to 6:30 p.m. for the final three race days of the spring meet.
