LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A nearly full-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall has attracted thousands of visitors since it went on display at the Shepherdsville City Park last week.
The replica memorial wall measures 370 feet in length and contains every name of those who died in the Vietnam War etched on it, just like the original wall in Washington, DC.
Thousands of people have visited Shepherdsville to see the wall since it went on display last week, on July 25. It’s an 80 percent scale of the original wall, and stands six feet tall in the center.
The traveling wall was created to give people unable to travel to the national's capital an opportunity to pay their respects to the vets who gave their lives for their country.
Organizers like James Thornton said visitors range in age from young children to veterans. He said it’s just one small way to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Thornton said visiting the wall allows veterans a chance to "reconnect with their brothers and their sisters. They know that folks that are out here at this time care. To me, that’s the important part, because they realize people do care."
Along with the Vietnam wall, the Cost of Freedom exhibit was also on display at the park, honoring those who served in other wars.
The displays were hosted by Shepherdsville in collaboration with Warrior Rounds and AVTT as a way to honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives for freedom.
Organizers will begin to pack up Tuesday morning to move the displays to their next destination.
If you didn’t get a chance to visit the wall in Shepherdsville, there are plans to bring it back to Mt. Washington in 2026.
