LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Cancer is the most dangerous and under-recognized threat to Louisville firefighters as it is the top killer of firefighters in the line of duty.
That's why the Louisville Fire Department partnered with the UofL Brown Cancer Center on Friday to give dozens of firefighters free head and neck cancer screenings.
Firefighters have a slightly higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population.
"Not only is the atmosphere of a structure fire a carcinogen, but the gear we wear is a carcinogen — it's loaded with toxins that we absorb every time we put that gear on," Nick Groft, Local #54 firefighter, said.
If you're a firefighter who couldn't make it to the cancer screenings Friday, you will have two more chances on Feb. 9 and March 8.
