Rev. Geoffrey Ellis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A visitation was held Friday evening for beloved west Louisville pastor and activist Rev. Geoffrey Ellis.

Ellis was born in the Russell neighborhood and raised in Smoketown. He attended JCTC, University of Louisville, and Simmons College.

Ellis also served in the U.S. Navy and was the pastor of Asbury Chapel AME Church.

He worked as a special assistant to two county judges, was the president of Louisville's NAACP and worked with Louisville Metro Police to help curb gang violence.

Many people at his visitation said he was a larger-than-life figure who will be greatly missed.

"He was a great friend, a great person, spiritually," Jerome Price, Ellis' friend, said. "Words can't express how we really feel about him."

"It's a great loss. He meant a lot to a lot of people," Bobby Bowens, Ellis' friend, said.

Ellis died last weekend after a battle with cancer. He was 84 years old.
