LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A woman was critically injured after being hit by a car on Dixie Highway near the Hardin County line. A child was also seriously injured in the crash.

In a release, Louisville Metro Police said the woman was struck by the vehicle about 10:30 p.m. Friday near Katherine Station Road.

Investigators don't know why the woman had stopped her car in the southbound lanes of Dixie Highway, but police said she got out of her car and was hit by another southbound vehicle. The impact knocked the woman into the northbound lanes, and the second vehicle hit her car injuring a child inside.

The woman was taken by ambulance to UofL Hospital in downtown Louisville with injuries police said are life-threatening. The child was taken to Norton Children's Hospital with serious injuries.

The vehicle that hit the woman stayed at the scene. The second driver was not injured.

LMPD's Traffic Unit is investigating.
