LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Construction is scheduled to start soon on Interstate 64 from downtown Louisville west to the Sherman Minton Bridge.

The project includes "preventative maintenance" on the I-64 bridges along the Ohio River.

Work includes steel and joint repairs, concrete patching, new drainage and the addition of a protective coating on bridge driving surfaces, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

A majority of the work will be happening underneath the interstate, starting on or after Monday, May 25, through June 1.

The work stretches from 2nd Street downtown to the I-64/264 interchange near the Sherman Minton Bridge.

Drivers should expect some overnight single-lane closures starting next week. Closures will not happen during the two-month shutdown of Interstate 65, which starts June 1.

It's part of an $8.8 million project aimed at preserving and extending the life of the overpass bridges, which were constructed in the late 1970s.
