Zoneton Fire Protection District to hire additional firefighters thanks to FEMA grant

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- October is the start of the fall fire hazard season, and the Zoneton Fire department is reminding residents about fire safety.

For counties in Kentucky that allow open burning, like Bullitt County, burning in the woods or brushlands can only happen between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. during fire hazard season, which ends Dec. 15.

Reports estimate the area's September rain deficit is about 2.5 inches, making ground cover like grass and leaves easier to ignite and burn faster.

"We really need to get the word out to people, asking that they be extra cautious when they have bonfires, cooking fires or other permitted burning," Zoneton Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal Tracey Key said in a news release. "Fires can get out of hand very quick."

Residents also need to be careful of disposing cigarettes and smoking materials along roadways because of the dry conditions.

The National Fire Protection Association gives some tips for campfires, bonfires and cooking fires:

  • Fire need to be at least 25 feet away from structures and flammable items/materials
  • Clear away from the fire area any dry leaves and sticks or any overhanging branches and shrubs
  • Avoid fires on windy and dry days
  • Watch children and pets around fires, and never let them play or stand too close to a fire
  • Never leave a fire unattended
  • Keep fires small for easier control
  • Never use gasoline, flammable or combustible materials
  • Always have a hose, bucket of water, dirt or sand nearby to put a fire out, and make sure the fire is out before leaving the site
  • Remember Stop, Drop and Roll
  • Treat any burns right away by cooling it with water for three to five minutes and then cover with a clean, dry cloth.
