Many of those vehicles have rerouted to the Second Street Bridge, which connects downtown Louisville and Jeffersonville, Indiana.
The crash happened before 10 a.m.
The bridge closed at 11 a.m. and will remain closed until 5 p.m.
The bridge has been closed to northbound traffic since March 20 while crews repair damage caused by a multi-vehicle crash on March 1.
A closure on the Second Street Bridge Thursday will leave just one lane open to traffic.
The guardrails on the nearly 100-year-old bridge were inspected in September 2023, but no one anticipated a crash would send a tractor-trailer through the barrier and steel supports.
The gates were supposed to be a temporary fix, but they've been in place on the busy bridge for nearly a year now.
Visiting from out of town for a conference, it wasn't Whiskey Row or a bourbon distillery that caught Ken McLeod's eye.
The lane closures start June 20 and continue through June 24.
The bridge won't reopen until state officials inspect the damage.
