The chief expressed concern for the safety of officers at Shawnee Park after last weekend's police shooting of Herbert Lee, who is accused of shooting a police officer in the park during the games.
Herbert Lee was shot and injured in the exchange of gunfire with police.
The annual basketball tournament begins its seven-week season on June 11.
Created by community activist Ben Watkins in 1969, the Dirt Bowl tournament aims to bring basketball and family-style picnics together.
Watkins and Janis Carter Miller founded the Dirt Bowl amateur basketball tournament while working for Metro Parks in 1969 with the goal of uniting people of all races during a time of turmoil both locally and nationally.
Newburg was crowned the champions of the 50th installment of the Dirt Bowl after defeating Business As Usual by a score of 59-54.
The competition brings together neighborhood teams from across the Louisville Metro area to compete.
"I am just so proud of the folks who put this together, Janice Carter, Ben Watkins, Cornell Bradley over here who has been the voice the dirt bowl. What has made this successful for 50 years is community," said Mayor Greg Fischer.
