JCPS Superintendent Marty Pollio had previously suggested reopening elementary classrooms by the third week of March and operating middle and high schools on hybrid learning schedules by the first week of April immediately after spring break.

JCPS elementary school teachers and staff who registered for COVID-19 vaccinations received their initial doses by Thursday at Louisville Metro’s Broadbent Arena drive-thru site.

The reopening plan goes against a suggested guideline for schools from Ky. Gov. Andy Beshear. 

The private school was one of the first to reopen for the 2020-21 school year in Indiana on July 22.

The school board will vote on two options for Jefferson County Public Schools to begin 2020-21 during its meeting Tuesday: starting wholly with an updated distance learning plan or offering parents the choice between sending their children back to school or enrolling them in virtual classes.

Leisa Schulz, the Archdiocese’s superintendent of schools, said area Catholic schools will be tasked with developing their own reopening plans and communicating those with parents.

In a letter to families Thursday, OCS Superintendent Greg Schultz wrote that the district will adhere to Kentucky's "Healthy at School" reopening guidance "to the best of our abilities" while continuing classes on a regular schedule rather than alternating students for in-person instruction throughout the week.

Gov. Eric Holcomb also announced a #MaskUpHoosiers campaign Wednesday, although he stopped short of requiring face coverings in some public settings.
