LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDRB) – Kentucky Country Day’s football team made history Friday afternoon, and did it the hard way.

In a physical, back-and-forth Class 1A state championship at the University of Kentucky’s Kroger Field, KCD survived a furious second-half rally from Raceland to secure the school’s first-ever football state title, winning 20-16.

All three Bearcat touchdowns came on the ground, as they leaned into a gritty, grind-it-out game plan that paid off late.

Leading 14-3 early in the second half after a short touchdown plunge from senior Parker Rudolph, KCD saw its lead evaporate. Raceland answered with back-to-back touchdowns, taking a 16-14 lead with just over six minutes to play.

But the Bearcats had one more answer, and it was a championship-winning one.

With just 3:30 left, senior Deion Davidson powered through the Raceland defense for a 3-yard touchdown run that put KCD back in front. It capped a five-play, 52-yard drive that began near midfield and featured Davidson as both a runner and receiver.

Davidson was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after totaling 83 all-purpose yards, including 63 rushing on 10 carries and the game-winning score.

KCD managed just eight first downs and 149 yards of total offense — compared to 364 for Raceland — but capitalized on field position and penalties, and made the most of its red zone chances, going 3-for-3 inside the 20.

Quarterback Caden Long completed all five of his passes for 55 yards and added a rushing touchdown in the second quarter to open the scoring.

The game ended with KCD’s defense holding strong. Raceland’s final drive reached the Bearcat 39-yard line, but on fourth-and-1, the Bearcats stuffed a quarterback keeper to seal the win.
