LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Coming off an impressive 30-20 win over No. 3 Oregon in Eugene, the Indiana University football program climbed four spots in the most recent Associated Press Top 25, to No. 3 nationally.

It’s the highest ranking in program history for the Hoosiers, who improved to 6-0 with their win at Oregon, and 17-2 in Curt Cignetti’s second season, after going 7-17 in the two seasons prior to his arrival.

Indiana spent two weeks at the No. 5 spot last season, and was ranked No. 4 in the final poll after the 1967 season.

Ohio State remains No. 1, with Miami — Louisville’s opponent Friday night — at No. 2.

Texas A&M and Ole Miss round out the Top 5, followed by Alabama, Texas Tech, Oregon, Georgia and LSU.

None of Indiana’s final six opponents is ranked in the current Top 25, and four of them are winless in the Big Ten -- including Penn State, which reportedly fired head coach James Franklin after a loss to Northwestern over the weekend, its third straight loss.

Ohio State and Indiana are not scheduled to meet in the regular season, but could meet in the Big Ten championship game.

Cignetti acknowledged Saturday’s win was a big one, but was quick to add that it will only matter if Indiana backs it up.

“It depends on what we do with it from here,” he said. “It’s a great win against the number two-ranked team in the country on the road. They had an 18-game home winning streak, right? And it puts us in position if we can continue to be successful, which means we have to show up to work on Monday as a team and hungry and ready to go against Michigan State.”

Indiana will host the Spartans (3-3, 0-3) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Bloomington.
