LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A former state representative and longtime educator in southwest Jefferson County has died, according to the Louisville Democratic party.

Charles Miller represented District 28 in the Kentucky House of Representatives from Jan 1998 to Jan. 2023. He also served for decades as principal at Pleasure Ridge Park High School for Jefferson County Public Schools.

"Charlie was a dedicated public servant who spent his life working to improve the lives of others, as an educator, coach, and legislator," the Louisville Democratic Party posted on Facebook. "His commitment to the people of Louisville and the Commonwealth will not be forgotten. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Carmen along with his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched."

Sen. David Yates, D-District 37, who currently represents part of Louisville in the state Senate, said South Louisville "lost a giant" on social media

"Charlie Miller was a mentor, a friend, a true public servant," Yates posted. "His charm, kindness, and quiet wisdom left a mark on everyone he met. His love for PRP and his entire local community will be felt for generations."

State Rep. Jared Bauman, who defeated Miller in the 2022 election, said southwest Jefferson County lost a legend.

"He made this his home and was a beloved fixture in Southwest Jefferson County. Even today, many of us recall his regular reminder to 'have a happy day,'" Bauman said in a statement. "I knew Charlie best as a political opponent and I can assure you that, as a lifelong educator, he taught me a few things even then. Ultimately, I appreciate most that he didn’t let our political differences harden into division."

According to Ballotpedia, Miller also served as a member of Columbia Hospital Board of Directors, Humana Hospital Board of Directors and Norton Hospital Board of Directors.

Miller was 85 years old.

Miller was featured on WDRB during the COVID-19 pandemic as he and his wife Carmen came out of retirement to educate their grandchildren.

State Rep. Lisa Willner said Miller understood and embodied what it means to be a public servant.

"Charlie championed our public schools, as well as all the kids and families served by them," Willner, who represents District 35, posted. "I will always remember his standing up against attacks against trans kids with utter clarity, conviction, and compassion.
