LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Fire Department is celebrating Women's History Month with 40 years of hiring their first women firefighters.
Three firefighters were hired on March 18, 1984, and they have set an example for women in the field today.
LFD Captain Tamara Stewart joined WDRB Mornings on Monday to talk more about the history.
Stewart did not originally see herself as a firefighter. She went to school to get a music education degree and was school teacher for eight years.
"It wasn't until I met someone that looked like me to encourage me to become a firefighter," Stewart said on WDRB Mornings.
The importance of women in the fire department comes down to having the diversity to solve problems. Some calls that fire officials make require some creative thinking to get the job done, so diversity in the department helps that.
Stewart said on WDRB Mornings that if you are looking at joining the fire department, don't be afraid. Physical fitness is key, and don't be afraid to lift the heavy weights!
At the Louisville Fire Academy, men and women are held to the same standards, which sets the example for the department.
