LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Many families will be on the water for Memorial Day, and it's important to know about boating and water safety.
U.S. Coast Guard member Trent Gulliford visited WDRB Mornings on Friday to give his tips on safety on the water and what the biggest risks are.
The biggest risks on the water Gulliford said is situational awareness. It's important to keep your eyes open at all times for your surroundings.
He also pointed out to look out for debris in the water as well as barges.
Anyone under the age of 13 years old should have a life jacket on at all times. Each person should also have a life jacket on the boat for them in case they need one in a case of an emergency.
A lot of mistakes Gulliford sees on the water is boats running out of gas and dead batteries.
"A lot of times during the winter, we aren't working on our boats, so it's in the back of our mind," Gulliford said. "So when it comes time to put your boat in, everything needs to be checked that it's up to date and in good standing."
Even as Coast Guards, they check their boats every time before going out on the water, no matter the last time they did it.
If you get in trouble on the water, call the Coast Guard command center on Channel 16 on your radio. If you don't have a radio, call 911.
