LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Whether you're hoping to be the "hostess with the mostest" or you’re a guest bringing a gift to a holiday party, there are ways to bring life to holiday events during cold winter days.

You’re probably seeing and thinking of a lot of reds, greens, and gold right now. And those color combos are even an option for indoor plants.

“We have the amaryllis here that we're holding. It's very trendy right now. But it's the waxed amaryllis. It’s something that’s super easy as a gift. You don’t have to water it. You just put it in a bright location and then it will flower for the holidays,” said Jeff Wallitsch, of Wallitsch Gardens.

Wallitsch offers gold wax encased amaryllis bulbs, that bloom with white or red flowers. You can also get the bulbs without the wax.

“You can put them in a jar with rocks and a little bit of water or you can put it in potting soil,” Wallitsch said.

Another holiday option is the traditional poinsettia, which also comes in some unique colors.

“The pinks, the whites. We have some with speckly leaves, variegated leaves,” Wallitsch said.

But don’t have them around pets. Wallitsch warns the sap can be dangerous for animals.

And when everything looks dead this time of year, some indoor plants like the Christmas cactus and the cyclamen are thriving.

“A lot of people use those for gifts. Its just again, color you can have. Some color and some green and some liveliness in your home for the holidays,” Wallitsch said.

For items you don’t have to worry about keeping alive, Wallitsch also offers paper snowmen and trees in a variety of sizes and colors, bottle-brushed trees, Santas, elves, mugs, and more to keep the season merry and bright.

“Its kinda just vintage and nostalgic to me,” Wallitsch said.
