LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Large crowds caused trouble in two different places across Louisville this past weekend.
Louisville Metro Police on Friday and Saturday handed out more than 60 citations on Bardstown Road in the Highlands.
Mayor Craig Greenberg said police also made 20 arrests in the area.
LMPD said the majority of the citations were for open alcoholic containers in public, public intoxication and people blocking traffic or walking in the street. There were also fights, but no one was taken to the hospital.
All involved were between 18 and 28.
"Whether it's there, whether it's Waterfront Park, we take this very seriously," Greenberg said. "We want everyone to be safe and we're going to work even harder to make sure that happens."
Greenberg was referring to the fights and disruptions with the large group of teenagers at Waterfront Park and the Big Four Bridge over the weekend.
Police seized one gun at that location.
Joyce Garner works at J. Gumbo's in the Highlands and said she likes seeing police frequently in the area.
"When you actually see them walking, on horseback or in a car, it just makes you feel safer," she said. "It makes you feel that you can bring your family down here to eat, to walk, to do whatever."
A spokesperson for the Louisville Hospitality Association provided a statement about the large number of citations:
"Citations and arrests this weekend were part of an ongoing joint initiative between LHA, LMPD and ABC to address roaming crowds of youth openly committing crimes in public. These groups are loitering and impeding traffic and businesses in multiple areas. They are not patrons of the city’s thriving hospitality industry. Business owners have long been asking for help in addressing these issues, and we commend the work of Mayor Greenberg, Chief Humphrey, and Director Silveria for being proactive and combating crime in real time."
LMPD said they will continue to have officers in the bar corridor during the spring and summer months.
