LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The pastime of aquascaping or "aquarium keeping" could keep you busy in the New Year.
WDRB's Keith Kaiser learns about the hobby from Louisville Aquascaping.
Aquascaping or Aquarium keeping is creating and maintaining an aquatic environment for various types of fish and aquatic plants.
The aquariums replicate natural habitats, ensuring the right balance of water temperature, pH levels, and cleanliness.
It becomes an artform by arranging aquatic plants, rocks, stones, cave work or driftwood, into something beautiful.
Pretty much, gardening under water.
This hobby is rooted in Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
Ethan Ray fell in love with the hobby and created Louisville Aquascaping.
He started keeping fish in 2015, moved on from maintaining monster fish in 2019 to keeping freshwater planted aquariums.
Ethan sources most of his materials and equipment from online companies that specialize in the hobby.
The Instagram aquascaping community is huge, and globally connected.
He has made friends all over the globe through aquarium expos competing in photo contests and live competitions.
Sharing ideas with other enthusiasts has created a community of aquascapers.
