LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- February is low vision awareness month.
WDRB's Keith Kaiser found a clinic helping people with visual impairments.
The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation (KLEF) Low Vision Clinic opened in November 2024 and has provided comprehensive low vision exams to 22 low vision patients at no cost to them.
The plan is to serve at least 100 individuals in the clinic in 2025.
Low vision is a range of visual impairments that can't be corrected with glasses, contacts, or other standard treatments, like medicine or surgery.
It can range from minor difficulties to near-total blindness and impact daily activities like reading, cooking, and getting around.
The good news is that vision rehabilitation services can make a difference in people's lives.
This new Clinic is the only clinic of its kind in the region, and through specialized care, advanced tools, and compassionate support, this clinic empowers individuals to reclaim their independence and quality of life.
The team consists of an experienced low vision optometrist, Dr. Andrea Smith-Gray, a scheduling and administrative specialist, Jennifer Gendeman, and support from KLEF staff members.
The clinic provides no-cost low vision exams to any resident of Kentucky or a surrounding state who meets the qualifying criteria and provides the required referral information. It is the only clinic of its kind in the region, and through specialized care, advanced tools, and compassionate support, this clinic empowers individuals to reclaim their independence and quality of life.
Insurance is not required and they serve all qualified individuals living with low vision, regardless of age, gender, income or other factors.
The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation was founded in 1954 by the Louisville Downtown Lions Club.
