It's not very common to see this level of drought develop during spring. Louisville is now in the "abnormally dry" category along with Mount Washington, Simpsonville and English. Moderate drought covers Bardstown, Elizabethtown and Leitchfield indicated by the brown color. That orange color represents severe drought in Greensburg, Horse Cave and Columbia where rain is needed the most.Â
As of April 16th, Louisville has a deficit of -5.58" of rain since January 1st. That's almost half a foot! Next question, does the pattern get more active to supply us with much needed rain? Simply put, not really in the next 7 days. The EURO and GFS computer models both show about .25" to .75" of rain through next Thursday with a majority of that falling on Saturday during Thunder Over Louisville. Since we are way behind, that's only enough to perhaps stabilize conditions if you get closer to 1". Others will see the drought worsen. By next weekend, there are some signals heavy rain may return. The WDRB Weather Team will keep you posted. Â
