LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The community helped raise $830,000 for Louisville's libraries.

As part Metro's Million Dollar Match fundraising campaign, if the community hits the $1 million donation goal, Metro government will match the donation to buy more books and materials for the city's libraries.

"This campaign is about making sure our libraries are filled to the brim with the materials that people need and that they want," said Chandra Gordon, executive director of The Library Foundation.

Louisville's libraries have already added more than 130,000 new books and materials during this campaign. Leaders said that has cut down wait times for print books, e-books and audiobooks.

"Library users and advocates told us that long wait times were standing in the way of access to books and learning, so we're responding by investing in more books and more materials," Mayor Craig Greenberg said in a news release.

On Monday, the Friends of the Louisville Free Public Library donated $100,000 to the campaign.
