LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new library in Fern Creek is coming in 2025, and people got a sneak peak at what it might look like Monday night.
Representatives from the Louisville Free Public Library, architects and Louisville Metro Council members were on hand to answer questions and listen to suggestions about the new library.
The old library closed in 2019 after city budget cuts, and citizens and council members have wanted a library back in the community.
"There are a lot of people that you hear say -- 'well do we really need libraries anymore?'" Lee Burchfield, Louisville Free Public Library Director, said. "Everything is on the internet and libraries are so much more than just books and magazines and newspapers, and movies and music, but they are all of that and lets be honest, not all of that is available on the internet and a lot of it that is available isn't free."
The new 18,000-square-foot library will be located next to Fern Creek High School, and will feature natural light, quiet and comfortable spaces to read and study, meeting rooms and dedicated areas for children and teens.
Construction is expected to start this spring. The new library is expected to be completed in 2025.
