LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A program that provides coats for JCPS students in need during the winter months returns for another year.
The Chase Gavin Coat-A-Kid program was started by Jefferson County Clerk David Yates in 2017, when Yates was a senator and former District 25 councilman. Yates collected winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves to donate to JCPS students.
Now he's partnering with current District 25 Metro Councilman Khalil Bathson to expand the program. It was named in honor of Chase Gavin, a former staff assistant for District 25, who passed away in 2021.
More than 300 coats were collected during last year's drive, but Yates said in an Oct. 24 news briefing "that's still not enough. We have so many children who have food insecurities, home insecurities -- let's make sure they got a warm coat."
