LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An iconic Louisville business will close its doors after nearly five decades in the Highlands Douglass neighborhood.
Electric Ladyland announced the closure Monday in a post on its Facebook page.Â
"After 48 incredible years, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of Electric Ladyland," the post read.Â
The smoke shop, record and metaphysical supply store opened in 1978 and is known for its bright Bardstown Road storefront, counterculture roots, and hippie-inspired decor and exterior, according to our partners at Louisville Business First. Named after Jimi Hendrix's final studio album, the shop's sign and logo feature the late musician's photo.Â
"What began as a small business grew into something so much bigger than we ever could have imagined," the Facebook post reads. "Electric Ladyland became a place of connection, creativity, self expression, and community. Through changing times, generations of customers walked through our doors, shared their stories, discovered something new, and became part of our family."
The announcement comes about two years after the business announced some changes, including a renovation, as the future of the property drew attention. It was listed for sale for a few months, but the store's owners didn't plan to close at the time. The owners said in a post on Facebook that even if the property had sold, they would have moved the business to another location in the Highlands.
No specific closing date or reason for the closure were mentioned in the Facebook post.
"To every customer who shopped with us, every friend who supported us, every employee who helped shape our journey, and every member of this community who believed in us, thank you," the post continued. "Your loyalty, kindness, and encouragement have meant more than words can express."
