LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — The Louisville Free Public Library kicked off its summer reading program Saturday with an event at Waterfront Park.

The program has been a tradition for nearly a century. It helps children and teens avoid summer learning loss by encouraging reading while offering prizes and incentives.

The Summer Reading and Cultural Pass Kickoff Event explored the theme of "Wild About Reading" and included a live performance from Louisville Leopards.

“We want to keep kids engaged throughout the summer when they are not in school and not learning on a daily basis, so it gives kids the opportunity to engage with books and learning opportunities,” library youth services manager Kate Schiavi said. “It just gives them something to do and stay busy all summer.”

Everyone who completes the program will receive free passes to Louisville museums and events. The program runs through Aug. 1.
