LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Free Public Library got a financial boost to expand its early literacy programs in the hopes of reaching more children.

The PNC Foundation awarded the library with a $250,000 grant, money to support weekly story times, outreach to families and the newly-renovated children's area at the Portland Library.

By expanding the programs, the hope is to ensure more children have access to early learning experiences that support school readiness.

"When young children come to the library, they're not just hearing stories — they're building language, social skills, and confidence that form the foundation for kindergarten readiness," Heather Lowe, director of the LFPL, said in a news release Wednesday. "Libraries level the playing field by offering access to books, technology, and joyful learning experiences that all children deserve."

The funding was announced ahead of National Take Your Child to the Library Day this Saturday, Feb. 7.
