LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — One of Louisville’s most famous Halloween traditions is getting a few changes this year.

Residents along Hillcrest Avenue — known nationally for its elaborate Halloween decorations — are gearing up for thousands of visitors expected to walk the street on Halloween night.

Homeowner Jacoby Botts said he spent at least $1,000 creating his disco-themed display this year.

“We definitely gave out, I think, 8,000 pieces of candy last year for trick-or-treaters,” Botts said. “We ran out by 8:30.”

To help manage the large crowds, visitors will need to pick up a free ticket at one of the neighborhood entrances on Brownsboro Road, Frankfort Avenue, Field Avenue or English Avenue. The tickets will be used to monitor attendance as part of new safety measures coordinated with Louisville Metro Police and private security.

The street will be closed to traffic, but parking in surrounding areas could be tight. Neighbor Jane Vanderburgh said the changes will make the event safer overall.

“People have been hit by cars. There’s usually an accident out front because the street is not really wide enough for cars to pass with people parked on both sides,” she said.

Visitors are again being asked to bring a canned food donation to benefit local food banks — a gesture organizers say is especially important during the ongoing government shutdown.

“If one person brings one thing, that’s like 5,000 cans for a soup pantry or a kitchen,” Botts said.

For those planning to take public transportation, TARC will offer rides to the event. Route 15 stops at Brownsboro and Hillcrest, while Routes 19 and 31 stop at Frankfort and Hillcrest. Regular fares apply.

Botts said for many residents, the months of planning and decorating are all worth it.

“We all do this for the kids, for surrounding neighbors and for people just to come and have something fun to do,” he said.
