Qannik the polar bear at Lou. Zoo turns 13 - 1.11.24

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Louisville Zoo's famous polar bear will soon celebrate becoming a "tween" with a Taylor Swift "Eras-" themed birthday party.

Qannik, the nationally-known polar bear who was rescued from the Alaskan wild in 2011, turned 13 on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

The zoo is inviting the public to celebrate Qannik at her Taylor Swift "Eras-" themed birthday celebration on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 11:15 a.m.

Organizers said the party begins at the Glacier Run exhibit. The first 100 guests will receive a limited-edition "Qannik's Eras Tour" poster, featuring 13 ways to help polar bears in the wild. While her exact birthday is unknown, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service dubbed Jan. 10 as her birthday, and the zoo celebrates every year on a Saturday in January.

Qannik has been at the award-winning Glacier Run exhibit since June 28, 2011, serving as a "fearless" ambassador for her species and other Arctic species and habitat. Qannik means "snowflake" in the Iñupiaq language, and is also the name of the Alaskan oil field where she was found, the zoo said.

The Louisville Zoo is open daily, year-round, with Fall/Winter hours being 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (stay until 5 p.m.). For more information about Qannik's birthday party, click here.
