LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg is inviting the community to paddle through take part in the city's annual Urban Canoe Adventure.
It's a chance to see the city from a new perspective during the free, family-friendly event that happens at Shawnee Park on Saturday, Sept. 20, and Riverview Park on Sunday, Sept. 21, according to a news release from the city.
"Whether it's your first time in a canoe or you’re a seasoned paddler, we encourage you to come out and enjoy the beauty of our park system waterways," Greenberg said in the release.
Jefferson Memorial Forest hosts the Urban Canoe Adventure. No registration is required, and all equipment will be provided. Participants should wear comfortable outdoor clothing -- but no flip flops. Bring a water bottle, and apply sunscreen beforehand.
The event is open to ages five and up, but anyone under 18 must have a signed waiver from a parent or legal guardian.
"This is a chance to slow down and experience Louisville from a whole new angle," Jefferson Memorial Forest Administrator Jessica Kane said in the release. "Our staff is here to help you build confidence on the water while connecting with nature and community."
Canoes will be launching at Shawnee Park (4665 Shawnee Park Drive) on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the final canoe returning to the boat ramp by 3 p.m.
On Sunday the adventure continues at Riverview Park (8202 Greenwood Road), with the first canoe launching at 11 a.m. and the last canoe returning by 3 p.m., according to the release.
The annual Urban Canoe Adventure is part of Jefferson Memorial Forest's Engaging Children Outdoors (ECHO) Program.
Last year, nearly 100 paddlers took park in the event at Shawnee Park.
