LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new farmers market is coming to downtown Louisville, hoping to fight food insecurity in the area.
The Gray Street Farmers Market opens Thursday, June 5 from 10:30 a.m-1:30 p.m., at 400 E. Gray St., between Preston and Jackson streets.
For opening day, there will be a DJ, food trucks for the lunch crowd and SNAP signup assistance.
The program is run by Catholic Charities' Common Earth Gardens program in partnership with UofL's School of Public Health and Information.
The mission of the farmers market is to make locally-grown produce more accessible to people who are in food deserts, areas where it is hard to find affordable or quality fresh foods and produce.
The market will feature different international foods like African eggplant, roselle, bitter melon and maize that is grown locally by refugee farmers from around the world. The market will also feature cooking demonstrations and "Meet the Farmer" educational events throughout the summer.
The market will be open every Thursday until Sept. 30, and accepts triple snap benefits and senior vouchers.
