LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- WFPK kicked off the 22nd season of its annual free concert series with some blues on Louisville's waterfront Wednesday evening.

People gathered on the Big Four Lawn at Waterfront Park for the first Waterfront Wednesday of the season.

Phosphorescent, Dehd and Tyrone Cotton kicked off the monthly series, which runs through September.

The concerts are held on the Big Four Lawn at Waterfront Park, next to the walking bridge. The lawn opens at 5 p.m. and music begins at 6 p.m.

Waterfront Wednesday also includes Waterfront KidsDay, which is a "dedicated area" for kids and families from 5-8 p.m. during each show, which returned this year for a second time.

"There's a lot of fun kids' activities for the kids to enjoy, so please bring your kids out, especially during the summer when they don't have school the next day," said Catie Nelson, director of events for Waterfront Park. "But it is a great area for them to play."

Organizers said the concert series is a rain or shine event, and to watch WFPK's social media pages, such as Facebook, for any updates or potential delays.

While outside alcohol, coolers, glass, and pets are prohibited, there are food and drink vendors on-site.

The free concert series first began in 2002, showcasing "local and emerging national recording artists as heard on radio station 91.9 WFPK." Since then, it has drawn thousands to Louisville's waterfront and has helped Louisville receive an international award as a top city for festivals, WFPK said.
